How We Get Food to Food Insecure Students?

The flowchart starts with Mary Anne Morgan, the leader of our Nutrition Team, every week, ordering and picking up food at the SLO Foodbank and delivering it to the staging locations for the monthly food distribution. Many thanks to Sue McCutcheon for being one of our storing and staging areas. That food is distributed at bi-monthly distributions at the Lopez High School staffed by students, and packed and distributed at the monthly food distribution at Nipomo Elementary School. We have also started packing and delivering 80 bags of groceries a month for families in our family resource center agencies.

Separately, weekly a large number of people purchase, pack and deliver brown bags filled with food for food insecure students at some of our elementary schools and the three middle schools. There are a couple of large teams at Trilogy doing this, one led by Judy Woo, and a second group forming led by Jean Baker. If you’d like to get involved in providing brown bags, please let us know. We are continuing to add more students in need to our program at other elementary schools in South SLO County.

Laundry Pop-Up

Our Laundry Pop-Up project held its third event on July 29th from 9 to 11 AM at the Launderia Laundre Mat in Nipomo. Project leader, Belinda Benassi and volunteers Kathy Zack and Marcy Warkentin offered to pay for 3 loads of laundry (washer and dryer) for 19 customers. There were a number of people who declined the offer and said to give it to someone who needed it more! One of the customers has a family of 8, and said she pays about $20 a week to do laundry for the family!

If you would like to volunteer with Belinda Benassi’s team, let us know, and we’ll get your name to her. We typically only need 3 to 4 volunteers each pop-up. Belinda is planning the next laundry pop-up for the end of August in Arroyo Grande.
