Early impacts of shelter-at-home orders on our mission. While you're socially distancing, something for you to read!
News of the coronavirus aka COVID-19 is overwhelming all of us. South SLO County Womenade is a bright light in an otherwise dismal situation for so many of the clients of the agencies we serve.
The good news first:
We distributed the proceeds of our February potlucks at the beginning of the month to the agencies we support.
Donors have answered the requests from our agencies for leather sofas for Lopez High School, a sewing machine for the volunteer art teacher at the high school, a soccer ball, pump, needle and cleats for a student playing soccer, fees for a storage unit for a single homeless mother
The Nipomo Elementary Food distribution took place in that raging rain/thunderstorm on March 10th and although fewer families were able to weather the storm we still gave food to 190 families!
The Nutrition Team met every Friday to put together the 30 nutrition bags for food insecure students (they won’t be meeting until school reopens)
The Unitarian Universalist church donated their second Sunday offering for February to South SLO County Womenade! Here is a picture of Judy Hornaday, Chair of the Community Outreach Offering Committee, presenting Rosemary Cleaves, President of South SLO County Womenade with checks totaling $1824.25. Before we left the church, someone anonymously gave another $100 cash!
We received a very substantial gift from an anonymous donor! Thank you SO much!
The not so good news:
We postponed the March 18th potluck to observe the request to socially distance for the next couple of weeks.
Schools are closed for at least the next couple of weeks.
The agencies we work with are continuing to assist the clients but are developing new ways of interacting and providing services as the news changes
Changing from face to face interaction to phone calls
Food bags filled and passed out through partially opened doors
Helping to search for daycare solutions for those parents who can/must work
Trying to fill the increased need for assistance for transportation assistance and utilities assistance due to the schools and work places closing
As the call to either socially distance or self-isolate increases, the needs of the client base will continue to increase – more people at home resulting in more need for food, daycare, transportation, utilities etc.
Please consider helping out by going on line to make a donation so we can help out our sponsored agencies as the needs grow.
