Update on Potluck and Raffle

The Potluck Fundraiser at Ann McDowell’s home had 45 people in attendance and was a roaring success! At the start of the event the agencies who attended each gave a brief overview of their mission. For the benefit of the many first timers in attendance, Ann recounted the history of San Luis Obispo County Womenade and South SLO County Womenade. The founder of the original Womenade, Sandy Richardson was at the event. We announced that Elaine Stewart, Sandy’s daughter, is reforming Womenade SLO and hopes to be active very soon in the city of San Luis Obispo.
The main draw of the potluck was our annual raffle. There were over 50 prizes ranging from handmade napkins and candles, to commissioned artwork and restaurant meals. There were so many prize winners, and ooo’s and ahhh’s were heard throughout the yard as the prizes were awarded.
The raffle ran from March 17th to April 17th and raised nearly $13,000! We send our appreciation to Caity McCardell, the raffle organizer, for an amazing job! Many, many thanks to all the prize donors and monetary donors.

Jesse, one of the regular clients at the Laundry Pop-Up sent a lovely note of appreciation and gave us permission to share it with you along with his picture.
“I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to Belinda and the team from South SLO County Womenade.
For many months now, me and others in the five cites have benefited greatly by the free laundry service the Womenade team have provided. With the rising cost of food, gas and other necessities, the free laundry service has been a complete blessing.
Additionally, we always enjoy seeing the Womenade ladies at the free laundry event -always serving graciously and with a smile.
Thank you Womenade ladies for all you do for our community. You make a difference.

Nipomo Food Distribution – Rosemary Cleaves, Sue McCutcheon, and Mary Anne Morgan - project leaders

The April Food distribution was on Tuesday April 8th from 4:30PM to 6:30PM at the Nipomo Elementary School (always the second Tuesday of the month). Due to the uncertainties in our community we have been in a quandary about how many families will show up each month. The SLO Foodbank was prepared with a generous amount of food, and we served 370 famines! Unfortunately many of our field workers are still working in the fields due to daylight savings time and can’t make it before we close down at 6:30..
We work with the SLO FoodBank and Nipomo Elementary School to make the Food Distribution happen. Thank you SLO Foodbank and all our fabulous volunteers! Let us know if you want to be on the substitute list. The next distribution will be on Tuesday, May 13th.
We Love Educators – Lisa Arakaki project leader
We Love Educators (WLE) Volunteers for Teachers Project is a group of in-class volunteers—many who are retired educators—who want to show appreciation and encouragement for South SLO County teachers, especially those who are new to the district and/or profession.
Anyone interested in learning more and/or signing up to volunteer (in elementary schools) can fill out this online Google Form: Interest/Sign-Up Form for SSCW's "We Love Educators - Volunteers for Teachers" Project which goes directly to project leader Lisa Arakaki.
The teachers, volunteers and students have expressed much appreciation for having volunteers in the classroom. The project currently has 17 volunteers in 6 elementary schools.
Alex Kramer, one of the Classroom Volunteers wrote the following about her experience:
“Each week I look forward to going to Nipomo Elementary School to help first & third graders with reading & writing. It’s a pleasure to support learning & literacy which are so important to me & it makes me appreciate being able to easily read & write. On my first visit, the third graders told me about their favorite books, & one title I heard most was "The Wild Robot” which I read & loved! Looking forward to its sequel.”
