Volunteer Opportunities Galore

Volunteer Opportunities

You asked, you get! Many of you have asked for opportunities for hands on community involvement. Last month we listed a number of them that we have created and below is a quick update on some of those. We really need help with the Weekend student brown bag food program.

Weekend brown bag food for students – we have a robust program ongoing for the middle schools. A big shout out to Judy Woo and her many volunteers in Trilogy who purchase and pack these bags throughout the school year. We’ve expanded the program to include a number of elementary schools. We need a second group of volunteers to keep this program going and to purchase items and fill bags.

Judy Woo has developed a great model for her group. She has a number of people who signed up to buy and fill their bags. If we use Judy’s model each volunteer would purchase food and pack bags for one student for a semester – that’s only twice a year, but we need a number of people to sign up to make this work. Of course if someone wanted to do pack for more than one student a semester that would be wonderful. We have a few drivers who pick up the brown bags and deliver them to the elementary schools. We also need a central drop off locations every two weeks for the drivers to be able to stop by and pick up their requisite number of bags to deliver to the schools’ As this program grows we will need more drivers as well. A packer can also be a driver! At the moment Ann McDowell has been packing all these bags on her own. Won’t you give her a hand?

The weekend bags are built around a protein eg. A can of chili, or peanut butter or tuna and rounded out with a vegetable, a fruit, breakfast bar, cereal and milk. Here is a picture of one of the sample bags.

We appreciate your consideration. There are only about 13 weeks of school left for this semester then you get a break for the summer. We will provide guidance and training. Please let us know if you’d like to be part of this wonderful project. sslocwomande@gmail.com

Updates

Laundry Pop-Up – We will begin this project slowly – once a month. A number of people have responded that they would like to be part of this project. Ann McDowell will be in touch with them soon so we can get started.

April – Admin April and Raffle – To help us pay for our expenses (they are very low – mostly insurance – no one will serve on a board without this - and accounting software) we hold a special fundraiser in the month of April to raise funds for expenses. All other funds raised go to meet urgent needs in our community. No one gets paid! The board runs both these projects. Please mark your check or donation “Admin April”.

The Raffle will run from March15th till April 13th with the raffle drawing taking place at the potluck at Ann McDowells home at 1793 Farroll Rd., Grover Beach on April 13th at 3PM. Although you don’t have to be present to win, it is always more fun when the winners are present to receive their prize. Every $20 donation - including Admin April donations - buys one raffle ticket. The drawing will be done electronically. Donations made on the day of the potluck will be entered in the drawing that day.

Future Potlucks – look for Evites closer to the dates!

March 16, Thursday – A Tea Party at Lopez High School 1055 Mesa View Drive, Arroyo Grande – Open to all. That’s in 10 days! Evites have been sent. Here is a flyer for the event. A great time to get a tour of the high school, the Wolf Den and see all the things happening at this wonderful school. Invite a friend, neighbor, relative. Bring a teacup and saucer, a dish of tea types of finger food to share, a check for $50 (or more is always welcome!) made out to South SLO County Womenade (we have a rubber stamp). Lopez High School is providing the tea and the fixin’s!
