7/25/20 Our volunteers make things better for the community!

Volunteers are gifts to the community! You asked for it!

Many Womenaders over the last nearly 5 months have been asking us if there are any volunteer opportunities.  Womenaders are big time volunteers, and the pandemic has cut off many of our normal outlets to volunteer especially for those of us who are over 60.

Our Womenaders are very resourceful – read on for a couple of community minded projects that have taken place plus some ideas on how you can volunteer.

Beginning in May there have been four face mask making projects going on.

Debby Tupper made over 100 for the family resource centers!

Mary Beth Baker also made many face masks(she didn't tell me how many!) for the Nipomo Elementary School!

Helen Powell started with 60 face masks for the family resource centers, and then switched to making masks for students and has made and donated over 100 and she’s still going!  Picture of the current donation of facemasks made by Helen Powell.

Then Judy Woo, our Trilogy representative, got her team of Womenaders organized.  They had planned to have a potluck fundraiser but when the pandemic came along they had to regroup.  The initially were going to try an outdoor small gathering, socially distancing with masks, and then the county COVID19 numbers started to soar.  So they came up with the idea to sew face masks and offer them as a fund raiser for Womenade in their community through their networks and at a recent Blood drive.  They raised nearly $1,000, and they’re still going!  Pictures of Judy and friends at the Blood drive and some of the masks offered.

Some additional ideas for volunteering are:

  • Volunteer to take over the leadership of the Nutrition Team – weekend food for the most food insecure students at Lopez High School, Mesa Middle School and Judkins Middle School.  The originator of the program is retiring and we need new leadership

  • Organize your network to collect your change on an ongoing basis and donate to Womenade – change is in short supply. We will make sure it gets back into circulation by depositing in the bank and using the proceeds to fund urgent needs in our community.

  • Organize a sock drive (socks with some wool or that are moisture wicking are best) to be distributed to agencies that serve the homeless population

  • Organize a knitting/ crocheting group to knit/crochet hats (nightwatch style) and scarves. It gets cold out there in the winter when you are homeless

  • Sponsor a “Go Fund Me” fundraiser for South SLO County Womenade and invite your social media friends to support it - we can't hold potlucks but you could help fundraise this way in lieu of a potluck!

  • Organize a group to sew face masks for children. When our county gets our COVID19 numbers down again, the schools will be able to be in person but the children will all need masks.

  • Sign up for amazon smile and support San Luis Obispo Womenade as the non-profit you want to support

  • Organize a collection in your neighborhood of new unused toiletries – regular sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant

We can help you get started.  All you have to do is either start doing it and contact us when you have a good amount collected.  If you are interested but don’t know how or where to start, let us know, and we will help you get started.

There are many other ways to help that are not necessarily South SLO County Womenade centric – like helping with getting the word out to people to register to vote and then to vote; spread the word about completing the census.  There are a number of organizations involved in these efforts.
